A contemporary remake with the original version. (Hairspray)
I am going to write an illustrated blog entry comparing a contemporary remake with the original version. I have chosen the film Hairspray which is a comedy, musical, romance. The original Hairspray was released in 1988. By a male director called John Waters. This film is about 'a pleasantly plump' teenager teaches 1962 Baltimore a thing or two about integration after landing a spot on a local TV dance show. The remake has exact same storyline but there are some things that are different. Adam Shankman is the director, and this remake was realeased in 2007.
This image shows John Waters.

Costumes
The film’s overall color palette is made up of pastels and soft-hued tones which is typical of the time. Every main character is distinguished in the crowd by the use of lighter colors and stronger patterns than the rest of the group.
Not much detail was put into the individual characters colors, because more detail was put into differentiating the main cast. Mainly the palette is used to reveal how the different levels of status dressed at the time. For example, the lower class Turnblads’ driving colors are pinks, light blues and bright yellows, while the more “refined” and upper class Von Tussles colors are burgundies, deep blues, dark greens and burnt orange/yellows.
For Tracy the color palette doesn’t really evolve along with her character, although the clothing does become slightly more tailored and perhaps more expensive as she gains popularity within the Show
Main Characters
Starring: Divine(Edna Turnblad), Deborah Harry(Velma Von Tussle), Jerry Stiller(Wilbur Turnblad), Leslie Ann Powers (Penny Pingleton), Ruth Brown(Motormouth Maybelle), Shawn Thompson(Corny Collins), Michael St. Gerard (Link Larkin) and Ricki Lake as Tracy.

Costumes
This re-make didnt exactly follow the same costume schemes. Designs were done differently to help diffrentciate the film, also it was someone elses idea's so they wanted to put their own impressions and creativity into the film. Designers still wanted to keep to the same time era that the film was set in 1962, so ideas came from magazines and the internet instead of looking at the previous 1988 version. Costumes were definately all lot more exagerative and brighter. When they performed with eachother you could see a big contrast on screen which improved the visuals for the audience.
Tracy’s signatures didnt really change, it was still all about her huge hair, hair bow, plaid skirt, and sneakers made for dancing! With the girly top and lacy socks to complete the look. Ms. Von Tussle is still all about glamour, piling on jewelry and rocking fancy dresses every day.

My OPINION ON REMAKING THE FILM
In my opinion, I dont think it is necessary to just remake a film for the sole purpose of cashing in on some extra money. However I do agree with remaking films, this is because sometimes good ideas run out and people dont take any notice of the film. A remake will give the film a wider audience and improve on some of its greatest qualities.
